Consortium for the Safety of Journalists in Ethiopia (CSoJ) is a national coalition committed to advancing press freedom, protecting the rights of media professionals, and promoting a safe and enabling environment for journalists across Ethiopia.

What We Do

CSoJ works through a comprehensive approach that combines advocacy, protection, monitoring, and capacity-building to strengthen the safety of journalists across Ethiopia.



Collective Advocacy

Engage with policymakers, government institutions, civil society, and international stakeholders to push for reforms that guarantee freedom of expression and press freedom.

Rapid Response and Protection

Provide coordinated emergency support to journalists facing immediate threats, including legal defense, financial assistance, temporary relocation, and psychosocial services.

Monitoring and Documentation

Monitor, document, analyze, and report violations against journalists including arrests, detentions, abductions, censorship, and online harassment.

Capacity-Building and Training

Organize training on physical safety, digital security, legal rights, and ethical journalism practices.

Gender-Sensitive Interventions

Develop tailored programs to protect women journalists from technology-facilitated gender-based violence and workplace harassment.

Solidarity and Networking

Unite diverse journalists’ associations to coordinate joint actions and share resources. Strengthen regional and national partnerships to collectively address threats against media professionals.

CSoJ is an inclusive coalition that thrives on solidarity. Membership is open to all legally registered journalists’ associations in Ethiopia that share our vision and mission.
